Trudi in her own words:
My name is Trudi Shiu. I was born and raised in Oakland, California, the youngest child of immigrant parents from Hong Kong. I didn’t grow up at all in a Christian home. Our family worshipped our ancestors which is really frightening when you go to the family room and there are giant framed pictures of ancestors with incense and food offered to them. When I was 11, my mother passed away from what I would now describe as a language and cultural barrier that delayed her medical care. It was then I knew I wanted to go into medicine to help people.
In high school, I was invited to a church youth group where I was exposed to Christian teaching.
I couldn’t say that at that time I was genuinely saved or I thought it was cool to get out of the house and participate in Western activities like bowling or roller skating. In med school, I thought it was important for women to be empowered and have “free choice”. I volunteered as a clinic escort for Planned Parenthood in Philadelphia to “protect” women from protestors outside of the clinics. In residency, abortion training was optional, but as I am a soldier of womens choice, I trained to perform abortions up to 24 weeks, the legal limit in California. Sometime after my divorce, as a single parent I was looking for preschool/daycare for my daughter and the closest one happened to be church affiliated. I entered a dark time and found Jesus during that time. Hallelujah!
Question One
How did you get into your profession as an OBGYN?
Question Two
At what point did you begin performing abortions? Or is that something you knew you would have to do during college?
Question Three
Was there any sort of counseling before the abortion took place? Was there any follow up or emotional support offered by your office after? Or was it basically looked at as a medical procedure?
Question Four
You are now in the apologetics class. I know that hasn’t been easy for you because we’ve talked about it a little bit. What made you decide to stop performing abortions? What was the moment or event where you said, “I can’t do this anymore”?
Question Five
As an OBGYN, do doctors and medical staff in your field look at the unborn as human? Or do they not equate them to persons? How does one have to justify ending the life of an unborn baby?
Question Six
I know this may be difficult, but can you tell us the different procedures for abortions based on gestation period. **I will give a disclaimer for those who cannot handle the details. I only ask because I feel it’s important that people know some babies are literally sucked out of the womb limb by limb. If this is too difficult for you to take about, we don’t have to**.
Question Seven
What advice would you give to a few different people in different situations:
1. To the woman who is contemplating an abortion?
2. To those who want to defend the rights of the unborn but are afraid?
